We recently received word that the 2021 Rasputitsa Spring Classic has been canceled. This popular race was to be our first gravel event for the year. After a long winter of pandemic living, it goes without saying that this is disappointing news.
The organizers certainly have good reasons for their decision, however. The official statement reads:
First and foremost, my best friend and co-founder, Anthony Moccia, has been battling cancer. The April date by no means adequately represents his battle being out of the woods. If we were a larger organization, his absence would be missed but manageable, but please understand we are a two-person operation. Cancer has been a harder hill climb than imagined. Anthony has demonstrated astounding courage and resilience, but time is essential for recovery.
Second, the Town of Burke has denied our request to host the 2021 April event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We wholeheartedly respect this decision as we continue to safeguard our riders and our local community. We are saddened at the economic consequences to our local economy, but acknowledge this is the lesser of two evils.
Third, there is speculation and uncertainty that the US/Canada border not be opened by this time. Our northern friends are an essential part of the Rasputitsa family. It would be with heavy hearts we proceed without them.– Email from Rasputitsa
Our thoughts are with Anthony and his family, and we look forward to the day when he can ride again — hopefully with all of us in Burke.
The event is scheduled to return on 04/30/2022.
